What Is Invisalign®?

Unlike traditional braces that require metal brackets and wires, Invisalign® orthodontic treatment involves wearing a series of clear aligners to straighten your teeth and improve your bite. Because the removable plastic aligners are custom-made for your teeth and mouth, they make the process more convenient and comfortable. Plus, with the iTero® CadCam System at our practice, no impression is needed in most cases.

Most Invisalign® treatment plans take between six months to one year to complete. The average treatment cost is comparable to that of traditional braces, and most dental insurance plans will cover some of the cost.

What Are the Advantages over Braces?

Invisalign® and traditional braces both result in healthier, straighter smiles, but the patient experience is incredibly different. Regular braces typically cause pain, discomfort, sores, plaque (from difficulty brushing and flossing), tooth discoloration, and tooth decay. Also, the metal brackets and wires often break and need more frequent maintenance at your orthodontist’s office. The worst part for many patients is the need to avoid crunchy and chewy foods, such as popcorn, bagels, pizza crust, nuts, apples, corn on the cob, and more.

For most patients, the biggest advantage of Invisalign® is that the treatment is nearly invisible. You will feel confident and comfortable, knowing that your teeth are being secretly straightened. Patients also appreciate that with Invisalign® removable aligners, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods. You can also brush and floss your teeth normally for better oral health.

Another significant advantage is the material. Because the trays are made from smooth, custom-fit plastic, there is less irritation to your teeth and gums. Unlike metal brackets and wires that need constant adjustment, Invisalign® requires less office visits - only every four to six weeks. The treatment is perfect for patients with busy schedules.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Invisalign® can effectively treat many of the same concerns as traditional braces. Some of the common conditions include the following:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Overly crowded teeth
  • Overbite (also known as overjet or closed bite), when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth
  • Underbite, when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth
  • Open bite, when some teeth are unable to make contact with opposing teeth
  • Crossbite, when the upper and lower jaws are misaligned on the front or sides of the mouth

These conditions might seem cosmetic, but they can actually lead to jaw pain, plaque build-up, tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, and even bone loss. Having straighter teeth means healthier gums, and healthier gums means a stronger defense against gum disease and tooth loss.
